Shaina Clingempeel
we, the living
look for last notes
beneath floorboards
father’s last words
scattered lecture notes
sharp cheese still fresh
in the fridge
now I blame this house
for what it holds:
father’s fading image
639 miles
between mother & I
the stale air
that seeps inside
the checkerboard bathroom floor
the overgrown ficus tied
to the laundry room door
to tame its hunger
even in dreams, I maunder
through these rooms; mother, I too
feed the chickadees
water the plants
pluck the leaves
from the pool
but algae clings
to each edge—
each door leads to a door
leads to a door
leading only in
another teacup-cluttered cabinet
where there is so much space
in this house
